The Air Force ROTC program offers scholarships to qualified applicants.  These scholarships are competitive, but if you qualify, you can earn a scholarship that can pay up to 100% of your tuition, lab fees, and $900/year for book expenses.  Additionally, scholarship students earn a monthly tax-free stipend that they can use for anything they choose.  Currently, the stipend ranges from $300/month for 1st year students to $500/month for 4th year students.

Detachment 890 Air Force ROTC is offered at the University of Virginia, as well as James Madison University, Liberty University, Old Dominion University – TeleTech net through Piedmont Virginia Community College, and Piedmont Virginia Community College,  through a cross-town agreement with the University of Virginia.  Through this cooperative agreement between our cross-town schools and UVA, JMU/LU/ODU-TeleTech net/PVCC students can enroll in AFROTC.  They sign up for Aerospace Science Courses just like any other courses, however they travel to UVA to actually take the class/labs.

We are also hosting an interest meeting for potentially interested students on Wednesday, 21 March 2012 at 7:30 pm in HHS 1203.  Any and all interested students should attend this non-committal, informational meeting to explore the many options the USAF has, scholarship opportunities provided by AFROTC, and answer any questions they might have.

The Air Force ROTC program at Detachment 890 is combination of elective academic courses and leadership training.  You take one ROTC class per semester.  1st and 2nd year students take one 1-credit course each semester.  During your 3rd and 4th year, you take one 3-credit course per semester.  Additionally, you would attend Leadership Lab once a week during each semester.

The focus of the academic program is as follows:  1st year students take introductory courses in what the Air Force is, how it works, etc.  2nd Year students take courses in Air Force history.  3rd year students take courses in leadership.  4th year students take courses in doctrine, geo-politics, and area studies.  Additionally, students who elect to stay in the program after their 2nd year attend 4 weeks of field training during the summer between their 2nd and 3rd year.

The goal of the program is to prepare students to be commissioned as lieutenants in the Air Force upon graduation from Detachment 890.  There are a variety of fields in which lieutenants can work in the Air Force - pilots, navigators, engineers, communications, intelligence, medicine, etc – the list is literally huge.  Students are selected for their career field during their 3rd year in school.

I can tell you that the Air Force is selective - we are looking for talented individuals who are dedicated, hard working, and willing to serve their country.  I highly encourage you to check out our website at www.afrotc.com – it is loaded with great information.  You can also check the Detachment 890 Air Force ROTC website at these locations:   http://www.airforce.virginia.edu and our Facebook page http://www.facebook.com/det890

Tomasz Arciszewski
George Mason University
Dr. Tomasz Arciszewski is a professor of Civil, Environmental and Infrastructure Engineering at George Mason University. He is an interdisciplinary scholar who specializes in inventive engineering, knowledge acquisition, visual thinking in inventive design, and in education. He has a formal background in the areas of structural engineering and mechanics with hands-on design experience in steel space structures and general structural engineering. Dr. Arciszewski has published more than 160 research and technical articles in various journals, books, and conference proceedings publications. In December 2009, he published his book, “Successful Education- How to Educate Creative Engineers,” which is a culmination of over thirty years of research in the field of civil engineering education. He is also an inventor, with patents in Canada, the United States and Poland in the areas of tall buildings and space structures. At GMU, Dr. Arciszewski teaches both undergraduate and graduate courses in Structural Engineering and Design and Inventive Engineering.
The speaker is a global scholar interested in education in the context of creativity. His recent book “Successful Education. How to Educate Creative Engineers” has been published in the USA and will be published this year in China and Poland. Recently the speaker taught Inventive Engineering in Taiwan, Poland, and Italy, and gave talks on Successful Education in these countries as well as in Singapore, UK and in the USA at several universities and at the Department of Education.
We are living in a rapidly evolving world, which creates various challenges for all educated people. Unfortunately, traditional disciplinary, or even interdisciplinary, knowledge and traditional deductive thinking skills are grossly insufficient to address our emerging challenges. We need a new kind of a professional, a product of Successful Education, who will be educated to learn transdisciplinary knowledge and to practice successful intelligence.
The talk will provide an overview of Successful Education, a new educational paradigm based on the Theory of Successful Intelligence and utilizing the Da Vinci Principles. The speaker will also talk about implementation of Successful Education in a modern university; it will be done mostly in the context of engineering education but with obvious implications for the liberal arts or science education. In fact, integrative education will be proposed. Such education will be focused not only on the disciplinary knowledge but also on integrative teaching leading to integration of disciplinary knowledge into transdisciplinary knowledge, which is the key to creativity in science and engineering.

Jobs for Graduating Seniors with U.S. PIRG

To contact us Click HERE
As a graduating senior, you are no doubt trying to decide what you will do next year, or even for the next 5 years. Consider a job with U.S.PIRG.
www.uspirg.org/jobs

When I was getting ready to graduate from college I knew I wanted to do something to make the world a better place but I didn't know what kind of job or career would enable me to make the biggest impact. When I heard about U.S.PIRG and how they tackle our country's biggest problems by mobilizing millions of people across the country, I was excited. As a campus organizer in my first year in 2008 I worked with more than 50 interns to register young voters for the 2008 Presidential Election. Together we registered more than 1600 students to vote and increased youth voter turn out by more than 400% in our district.

The deadline to apply for our 2012-2013 positions is Friday April 27th.
Apply at www.uspirg.org/jobs

If you're like me, you look around and see too many problems in our country to sit back and do nothing. With U.S. PIRG, you can actually get paid to take on and solve the problems our country faces; from advocating for policies that will make sure that the food we eat and the water we drink are safe and free of toxic chemicals, to researching the solutions to challenging issues, like balancing the federal budget (our staff found ways the debt commission could save $2 trillion!)

U.S.PIRG is a federation of state-based public interest advocacy group. And working together we have a much greater opportunity to actually make a difference. U.S.PIRG has a 25-year track record of organizing on these issues, and we're hiring over 100 graduating seniors to jump right in and make a critical impact as a campus organizer or in our fellowship program.

A summer course in Metals and Jewelry

To contact us Click HERE
Registration for Summer session at JMU is in full swing, and it's a great time to take a Metals and Jewelry class through the JMU School of Art, Design and Art History.

In contemporary practice, craftsmen and artists use the techniques and materials of jewelry to create sculpture, body adornment, and decorative and functional objects. The summer sessions of ART 240 Metals and Jewelry are a great way to learn more about metal and metalsmithing techniques, creative problem solving, and the composition of beautiful and meaningful objects. The class is also an on-going experiment in applied thermo- and fluid-dymanics, and metallurgy.

This summer, in addition to teaching the basics of small-scale metal fabrication, we will be covering Laser and Micro-TiG welding and induction casting techniques as well.

These are intensive 3-credit summer courses that run in four-week blocks (May 14-June 8, and June 11 - July 6, from 12:30 to 5:20 pm.) with class sizes that are very small so I can be focused on you.

The usual pre-requisites and restrictions on registration for this class are waived for summer enrollment. If you experience any difficulty registering, please contact me.

Please visit my website for more information on me and the Metals and Jewelry classes at JMU at http://www.mrooker.com or email me at rookermd@jmu.edu.

Thank you,

Four-Year-Old Program Graduates Initial Students

Posted: May 7, 2012
By CANDACE SIPOS

Engineering honors graduate Christina DiMarino (right) chats with Ronald Kander, founder of the engineering program at JMU, after graduates received their degrees on Saturday. (Photo by Michael Reilly) HARRISONBURG — Leah Haling and Dan Wolfe had no idea what they were getting into when they became two of the first engineering students at James Madison University four years ago.

They decided to give the budding program a try, and on Saturday were two of the 45 students who walked across the stage at the School of Engineering’s first graduation.

“There have been some ups and downs,” Haling, of Arlington, said. “[But] I wouldn’t trade [my decision to go to JMU] for the world.”

The two were taking pictures in a group after the ceremony, donning their black robes with splashes of orange and yellow.

Both said the small size of the engineering department — which Wolfe, of Midlothian, called a “breath of fresh air” — was a bonus.

Studying as a relatively small group of students with similar interests, the class quickly became a family.

“We’ll stay friends for life, that’s for sure,” Haling said.

But the school is growing quickly, with 150 students in the freshman class this year, according to Ronald Kander, who founded the program.

During the planning stages of the program, people wondered whether it could attract even 50 students a year, he added.

Kander now serves as executive dean of Philadelphia University’s College of Design, Engineering and Commerce, but he made the trip to Harrisonburg for his brainchild’s first graduation.

“It’s absolutely amazing,” he said. “I’ve been waiting for this for years.”

As the head of JMU’s Department of Integrated Science and Technology in 2005, Kander started thinking about the possibility of adding an engineering school.

With the help of Douglas Brown, provost and vice president for academic affairs at the time, a committee created a “really compelling” curriculum that “trains engineers for the jobs that don’t even exist yet,” he said.

The program focuses on sustainability, teaching students not only technical skills, but also how to consider the effects — environmental, social, technical and economic — their approach to any given project might have.

Many of the newly graduated students have already found jobs. Of the 45, 24 have secured full-time engineering jobs and 12 are going to graduate school, according to the university’s public affairs office. Haling and Wolfe are two of those 12.

Seven other students have received offers from employers or graduate schools but haven’t decided what they’ll do yet.

Christina DiMarino, valedictorian of the program and the student speaker for the ceremony, said that one project requiring her to construct a bicycle taught her various lessons, including that “nothing ever works out the first time.”

“The broad nature of this program challenges us in ways that we did not expect,” she said. “I guess it’s about that time to show the world what the JMU School of Engineering really is.”
